The VCS I'd like...
The world of cloud systems for managing code repositories is always evolving, which is why the features they offer change from year to year.
In 2018 I used all of them, both for personal projects and for professional ones.
I'll stick to the main points that make me pick one system over another, let's get started!
GitHub
Until last year, I had a GitHub subscription that cost me a whopping 7 euros a month to have my private repositories. The price of a pizza a month seemed trivial to me, until I discovered Gitlab, which let you have private repositories for free!.
Well, starting this year GitHub gives all its users unlimited private repositories for free!
Why choose GitHub?
GitHub is the most famous and most used system in the world for open source software. I choose it when I want to look for new projects, and I usually prefer to make my contributions on GitHub rather than on the others for the sake of visibility and audience. I also choose it when I want to create a public repository.
Gitlab
Gitlab offers unlimited free repositories plus 2000 minutes a month of its integrated CI/CD...
Integrated CI/CD!!!
I think this is the main reason for choosing it. On top of that it's an open source system and can be installed as a standalone version on your own servers.
Why choose Gitlab?
I choose Gitlab when I want private projects with integrated CI/CD. Gitlab also provides an integrated docker registry for every repository. All in all, it's a truly all-round solution.
BitBucket
BitBucket is part of the Atlassian suite and as such is integrated with all their services, Jira and Confluence first and foremost.
Unlike Gitlab and GitHub, it also handles Mercurial repositories, which can be a plus for many.
It also offers unlimited private repositories to all its users and to teams of up to 5 members.
Why choose BitBucket?
BitBucket has on its side all the permission features and code approval systems even in its free version, something GitHub and Gitlab don't have. For me this is the number one reason to choose it.
Conclusions
I hope I've given you my reasons for choosing in as little time as possible, write me any questions in the comments!
See you next time! :)
